MAJIMBO AKUMONYO GEORGIADIS

 I serve as a member of the Law Reform, Devolution and Constitutional Implementation from 2018 to date. Our core mandate as the committee is to monitor legislation and draft memorandum on behalf of the society on any controversial law being legislated upon.

As a committee, we’ve been able to review several laws, the key legislation we handled was the one affecting the practice of advocates. We submitted our comments and memorandum to Parliament on the Proceeds of Crime and Anti Money Laundering Amendment Bill that sought to lift the advocate – client privilege.

We were also able to carry out to the following projects;
1. To review the Civil Procedure Act
2. To review the Statutory Instruments Act.
These were done in conjunction with the Kenya Law Reform Commission. The draft reports were submitted to Lsk.

We were also able to collate and collect comments on the amendment of the LSK Act, developed a bill that was forwarded to LSK. I believe the same was forwarded to the branches for public participation.

We equally held a session with the Senate Justice and Legal Affairs Committee where we pushed for fast tracking of the County Attorneys Bill that seeks to create job opportunities for advocates.

I have also been an active member of the society, participating in the activities of the society by filing motions during the AGM to streamline the activities of the society and enhance financial accountability.

I have turned up in police stations on several occasions when members of the society were arrested in the line of duty. To be specific, I have gone to assist advocates in Rongai and Parklands police stations.

I have also in my own capacity handled serious Public Interest Litigation matters that challenged state excesses.

C) In my term at the Council, I seek to work with fellow Council Members to achieve the mandate of the Council as outlined in section 4 of the LSK Act 2014 and address members interests as they may arise from time to time. This is crucial because when issues emanate from the membership, an efective Council has no option but to address them alongside the detailed mandate enshrined in section 4.

I also seek to champion devolution (Majimbo) and strengthen our branches that are mandated to address the issues of practice and welfare under sec 24 of the LSK act. I seek to spearhead an agenda that will ensure LSK defends the rule of law which will include effective Public Interest Litigation.
